Oil sludge is a gel like substance that can build up until it eventually blocks oil galleries, preventing the normal flow of oil throughout the engine. This severely reduces wear protection as some areas of the engine become 'Starved" of oil and also impedes proper cooling of the engine. The radiator, cooling system, in fact basically the entire engine, have to work harder and increased wear and component failure is the usual outcome.
